South Carleton Arts program is designed to meet the needs of those students who plan to study the Arts at university or college, who plan to pursue a career in the Arts, and/or for those who enjoy the Arts for their own pleasure. First-year courses lead to a variety of options which include band repertoire, musical theatre, theatre production, crafts and ceramics, photography and media studies. Students have the opportunity to achieve a wide breadth of Arts involvement at South Carleton. Many students have successfully taken a combination of courses from several of the Arts disciplines for a richly rewarding experience.

Dance
(ATC1O, ATC2O, ATC3O, ATC4M)
The Dance program focuses on jazz, hip-hop, rythmics and tap dance. Students are required to provide appropriate dance wear and footwear (jazz oxfords, tap shoes and black jazz pants). The program also features a mandatory end-of-term recital for all dance students in which students showcase four routines that they have worked on throughout the semester.

Musical Theatre
(ATU10, ATU20, ATU30, ATU4M)
This course runs year-long and outside of the regular school day. Classes meet once a week after school from 2:30 - 5:30 PM. The emphasis is on the preparation and performance of production pieces for an audience. Students will study vocal, acting and dance in relation to musical theatre. Musical Theatre students are required to attend additional rehearsals at lunch and after school prior to performance dates.

Music
The Music program features grade 9 and 10 classes in instrumental music (AMU1O, AMU2O). Students entering grade may also study band-repertoire (AMR2O) or guitar (AMG2O). Senior courses are available is both areas: instrumental (AMU3M, AMU4M) and band - repertoire (AMR3O, AMR4M). Students are responsible for providing their own musical instruments (except drums). Students can rent instruments form the school ($100.00)
The Arts help to develop creativity, communication, co-operation, confidence, concentration, critical thinking and competence.

Dramatic Arts
Theatre Production
ADD2O, ADD3M, ADD4M
A detailed program is handed out as the audience takes their seats. The house lights dim. A hush ripples through the audience. The stage lights reveal a beautiful stage set. An actor makes an entrance wearing a striking costume. If you want to design, crew, and act in a wide variety of stagings then the Theatrical Production stream is for you! Although the overall expectations are the same as the Creative Drama stream, students in Theatrical Production courses complete different assignments and perform for the public. Classes may also perform in The Cappies and The Sears Drama Festival.

Creative Drama
ADA1O
Cant draw? Cant dance? Cant play a musical instrument? Drama is the course for you! Through drama games, warm up activities, and various small/large group and solo assignments, students will explore tableaux, ritual, mask, choral speaking, mysteries, Coffee House poetry, and Shakespeare. All performances are done in class except for the performance for the parents toward the end of the semester.

ADA2O
Took grade 9 drama and loved it? Didnt take grade 9 drama and wish you had? Either way, everyone is welcome in grade 10 drama! Mime, music movement, mask, story telling, and anthology are some of the dramatic forms that will be explored in this course. Students will be working more independently and will also increase their use of production elements (set, props, light, sound, costume) in order to enhance their presentations. All performances are done in class although a performance for the parents may be scheduled for the end of the semester.

ADA3M
This course is designed for University bound students who wish to continue in the Creative Drama stream. Dramatic forms that will be explored include Radio play, monologue, sensory journey, the style and works of George Bernard Shaw, and docudrama. All performances are done in class although a performance for the parents may be scheduled for the end of the semester.

ADA4M
This course is designed for University bound students who wish to continue in the Creative Drama stream. Dramatic forms that will be explored include two-handed scenes, medieval theatre, puppetry, and childrens theatre. Various acting/theatrical styles (Method, Boal, etc.) will also be studied. All performances are done in class except for the childrens theatre performance which will be presented to feeder schools.

Visual Arts
AVI1O - Visual Arts
A foundation course in visual arts that will prepare students for future participation in art. The areas of study will consists of elements and principles of design through various media. An appreciation of art will be taught so that students can analyse and intelligently make informed criticism of theirown and others' work. Studies will be taken in Canadian art as well as historical cultures of the Western world such as Prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman.

AVI2O - Visual Arts
Building on their knowledge from the grade nine course, a more in-depth review of the elements and principles of design, including the creative and design processes in relation to form and content, will be covered. Historical knowledge will be gained through the investigation of the Middle Ages from Byzantine through to Renaissance art.

AVI3M - Visual Arts
Studio activities will be used to further enrich the students' understanding of art. This will be built on by the study of Western and Canadian art with Western specifically emphasizing a survey beginning at Northern Renaissance and continuing up to the Twentieth Century.

AVI4M - Visual Arts
This course will prepare students for post secondary studies in the visual arts and stress the importance of the development of a presentation portfolio. Through the creation of such a portfolio students will show an understanding of different art forms, stylistic analysis and reflection , and a fundamental grasp of art history from prehistoric to present times.

Crafts General
AWA3O
This course focuses on such studio activities as ceramics, fabric art, jewellry making, casting, print making, calligraphy, paper processes, soft sculpture, paint finishes and picture framing. Students will also examine historical and cultural contexts of Western art (including Canadian art) and art from various world cultures to support their study of specific media.

Yearbook
AWE3MU
This courseis designed to familiarize students with the skills and techniques used to bring a variety of publications
from the concept stage to completion as published documents. Students will obtain hands on experience in all facets of publication design including basic journalism, graphics, layout, marketing, advertising, and basic photographic composition principles. Major projects for this class will include the production of the schools yearbook.. The skills covered in this class are transferable to careers in the real world. Students will receive a solid grounding in these skills, as well as the ability to focus in areas of individual interest to them. A positive attitude and commitment to the class projects are essential as well as the willingness to work with fellow students.

Crafts General
AWA4M
This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge acquired in AWA3O, with a continuation of such studio activities as fabric art, ceramics, jewellry making, casting, print making, calligraphy, paper processes, soft sculpture, paint finishes and picture framing. The historical and cultural significance of the different crafts will be investigated.

Drawing and Painting
AWM4M
This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills in painting and drawing. It provides students with opportunities to further develop their techniques while exploring a variety of mediums. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities and will consolidate their practical skills. They will also analyse works of art and study aspects of art history.

Photography
AWQ3O
Students will learn about the camera and its components. They will practice black and white film processing and develop exemplary darkroom techniques and discipline while exploring a wide range of subject matter. Students must provide their own SLR cameras.

AWQ4M - Photography
This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge acquired in AWQ3O.

Media Studies
ASM3O, ASM4O
These courses examine the techniques, ideas and values of film making. The first year course, offered in grade 11, examines the Hollywood phenomena. The grade 12 course takes a deeper look at Canadian and foreign film. Practical film making will also be explored in both courses. Students will need a VHS video tape, a recording tape, and a CD ROM. Access to a VCR is recommended.
